What is click fraud?

Click fraud is intentional activity that creates advertising clicks without genuine customer interest, usually to waste an advertiser’s budget or generate publisher revenue.

Click fraud and invalid traffic are related, but not identical

Invalid traffic is the broader category. It can include malicious fraud, automated tools, duplicate interactions and accidental clicks. A visitor can also be real but poorly targeted, which is low-quality traffic rather than proven fraud.

Common examples

BOT

Automated clicking

Software generates impressions, clicks or downstream events that imitate advertising engagement.

MANUAL

Intentional repeat clicks

A person repeatedly clicks an ad to increase costs or publisher earnings.

PLACEMENT

Manipulated interaction

Ad stacking, invisible placements or deceptive layouts create interactions users did not intend.

Warning signs that deserve investigation

None of these signals proves fraud alone. Analytics measurement, consent tools, page performance and campaign settings can produce similar symptoms.

How advertisers can investigate

First inspect the invalid-traffic reporting inside the advertising platform. Then compare campaign cost with site sessions, server logs, click IDs and qualified conversion outcomes. Prioritize patterns connected to meaningful spend.
